All students are required to complete 24 hours of Independent Service. In order to earn these hours, students must volunteer with nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations.
Students may check the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission Volunteer Office website for a list of sites if they are having trouble finding a place to volunteer.
Students must pick up and fill out a Student Service Learning form (found at the School Counseling Office) in order to earn service hours. This form must be signed by the student, their parent/guardian, and the supervisor at the organization they volunteered with.
Examples of approved community sites/activities for independent service-learning hours: nursing homes, hospitals, park clean ups, free tutoring, etc. If you need help brainstorming other ideas, please see your School Counselor!
Deadlines for submission of the Student Service-Learning Forms are as follows:
– October 15 (for any independent hours obtained between July and August 30)
– January 31 (for any independent hours obtained between September 1 and January 31)
– July 15 (for any independent hours obtained between February 1 and June 30)
Please see attached for the PGCPS Service Hours Form, which is required for students to receive credit for the service hours they have completed.
